What you do with your lottery winnings is ultimately your business. But what a man in Michigan did with his seems unadvisable, especially given the unfortunate events that followed. The man said he won $30,000 playing the lottery, bought a $20,000 gold chain and then had his jewelry stolen at a gas station on Detroit’s west side. GAS STATION SURVEILLANCE VIDEO SHOWS ALLEGED ROBBERY Security footage was obtained from a Mobil gas station near West Warren Avenue and Grand Boulevard. The man, who was identified as Jamal, is seen inside the store with the alleged assailants walking into the store. One is seen clearly on camera. Later, Jamal is seen outside the store and was attacked by the men. They eventually grabbed the chain from Jamal as he struggled to get back into the gas station. According to the report, the gas station owner said one of the assailants may have committed a similar robbery at the gas station a few months ago. Footage of that alleged robbery also was shown on the report. Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Detroit Police Department. WHAT EXPERTS RECOMMEND WHEN YOU HIT THE LOTTO Although the $30,000 lottery score is modest compared with multiple million-dollar wins, it’s a good course of action to be responsible with any winnings. If you hit a big lottery score, you should consult an accountant, financial adviser and tax attorney. A Michigan lawmaker also introduced a bill in the state House of Representatives to allow big lottery winners to remain anonymous. The bill, introduced by Pat Outman (R-Six Lakes), passed the House in May and is now in front of the Senate’s Regulatory Reform Committee. Also in the news this week, a mid-Michigan man who blew nearly $1 million in lottery winnings was found dead after several tumultuous years following his 2010 score.
